Week 1

Skills: Animation, Graph Editor, Bullet Physics Engine, Soft & Rigid Body Dynamics

Assignment: Start working on a design for a Rube-Goldberg machine using Bullet

Previously, we had only learned to use keyframes to create simple animations. This week, we had a more in-depth look into the Maya Graph Editor and learned how to create and adjust our animations by manipulating the tangents and keyframes.

Example:

We started by keyframing the start and end positions on the Z and Y axis of a ball we wanted to animate bouncing down a set of stairs:

Then we learned how to add keyframes to the tangents to adjust the position of the ball on the Z and Y axis. Then we learned all the different controls for manipulating the curve (e.g. breaking the tangents, changing the tangent length, etc.) and we experimented until we were satisfied with the animation:

Then we duplicated the ball and the curve to further experiment with creating a heavier ball:

Final animation:

In the second part of the session, we were introduced to the Bullet physics engine inside Maya.

We learned the basics of creating passive and active rigid bodies and how to influence the simulation by adjusting the properties of the rigid body shapes such as the mass, friction, and restitution, as well as creating rigid body constraints to create levers:

Our assignment for the next 3 weeks will be to create a rube goldberg machine using the bullet engine.
